Summer Survival

One of the best things about going back to work is being able to get out of the summer heat on a regular basis. And this summer, the heat has been unreal! At 8:30 this morning, it was already 88° outside. That is absolutely insane!

shirt —Nine West (thrifted)
skirt — I.Q. & Co. (thrifted)
sandals — Born (DSW)
necklace — gift (Thanks, Mom!)
bracelet — thrifted

Needless to say, that is what I dress for these days to be comfortable in these kind of temperatures, especially since my house doesn't have air conditioning."Oy vey!" After a couple of days of temperatures over 90°, the inside of my house is literally and figuratively an OVEN!

With temperatures like that at home? I especially love going in to work! This particular outfit was perfect sleeveless, loose, and barelegged, with a slit up the front of my skirt to increase air circulation. LOL. (I wore this skirt another way here.)

What may even be worse than hot summer days are even hotter summer nights! There is just no escape from the heat. And I'm afraid that it has also affected my posting. I get home and I just can't move, let alone take pictures or sit at a hot computer to write a post.

What summer survival skills (SSS) have you learned to keep yourself cool and productive?

Thanks for all the good wishes about the new job. And guess what? It's only 4.7 miles away! I could walk all the way there and back in less time that it took me to get to my last job!

  1. Hi Kari, Love that glass pendant! Reminds me that I have one but never got around to putting it on a ribbon. Thanks for the inspiration!
I really don't like the heat in general and since I turned 50 a couple of years ago I really don't like wearing tank tops. I'm trying to just not give a damn anymore because it truly is more important to be comfortable than vain. I love using a spray mister on hot days to keep myself cool.

    1. What do you mean by a tank top? Do you mean sleeveless? if that's the case, I would be in trouble (not that I like the look of my arms, but sleeves just feel so confining in the summer!). I use a bandanna -- I get it wet and put it on the back of my neck. And I soak my feet before trying to go to bed.

  2. That's great news about the job being so close (mine's about 6 miles - so easy : > ) Sorry about the hot house though. I've used the little portable fans sometimes, and I keep my face damp with cool water when it gets too hot to breathe out there. You look cool in this outfit and your necklace is really pretty.

    1. Thanks Patti. I don't know how all of you in the south survive. At least for us in the north, the sun is not that intense. and yes, I just can't get over how easy my commute is! so nice. I think I spend more time waiting at lights than I do driving!

  3. What a beautiful necklace. Nice comfortable looking outfit, too. And you don't have to wear pantyhose to work--that's the best! I used to be a real heat freak--the hotter it was, the better I liked it. I think getting old has changed me, or maybe it's working at home now (no AC here, either). I like it in the low to mid 80s now; the 90s get to me too much. Glad your new job is working so well.

    1. I don't know about you heat freaks ... LOL. I can't deal with it now, and I couldn't deal with it before! At least when I was growing up, I lived on a lake, and I could always go and jump in to cool down (and believe me, we did)! Thank heavens somebody else knows what no a/c is like!

  4. I live close to my work as well and love it! I also unfortunately have been raised in heat...it seems to get harder to endure as I get older! Love the necklace and always love to listen to a great song!! have a wonderful weekend, Kari!

  5. K! Hi! So happy to see you. Can you bike to your new job? If so, I absolutely recommend it; it's the best.

Love that skirt on you, btw. Great color and it shows off your derriere to nice effect. ;-)

    1. LOL Gracey! I picked the picture with the best effect. :D I do want to bike to work, but there is one really scary spot where the road goes over the highway and people are merging on and trying to get over to exit at the same time, and of course it's on a hill and a slight curve. I want to try it though ... but not in this heat. I can go a longer way around (it would double the distance though ... )

  7. I know that heat can sap all one's motivation, just like an expensive AC bill can do. We're cool, but I'm bracing for what I know will be an AWFUL bill this month. Love the blue skirt.

You might try going to bed with a wet head. I used to grade papers with wet hair when I was without AC.

  8. Love the colorful skirt! I'm so glad the new job is working for you. My mom actually just got a muuuch better job that's a quick walk from her house in better working conditions.

Those of us in the South survive by having central air as a standard thing, and a/c units being in even the crappiest of apartments. Terri's right - it does raise the electric bill, but I'd rather have that than heat stroke.

  9. I don't have AC at home, either, so I can totally relate. I like the sleeveless top because it looks cool yet tailored enough for a professional setting. I don't love my arms, either, but I go sleeveless all the time, even at work. It's just so much more comfortable. And I LOVE the necklace.
